Why I chose to study Japanese in English
The reason why I chose to study Japanese is that I am attracted by Japanese culture, especially the 戦国時代(Sengoku jidai). I like the story of Three Kingdom Period in China too. Learning Japanese can be helpful in reading and understanding these stories. The translation between languages sometimes can be misleading and even wrong. Therefore, knowing the language is the key to understand the true meaning of the texts.
I am excited that so far what I have learned in class can already be used in daily conversations in Japanese. The challenging part is the use of different particles with different sentences which can mean the same thing.

Hi 満田さん. I don't know much about baseball, but I remember I read a manga series called Touch(タッチ) when I was in primary school. The rules in baseball seem complicated.

DeleteWow that's so cool that you want to learn more about Japanese history. What about Sengoku jidai interests you specifically? I'm also interested in learning more about it - I felt that it wasn't really covered much in history classes here. What was also surprising to me was the lack of coverage on Japanese Americans in the U.S., so I ended up looking more into this and wrote my research paper last semester on the treatment of Japanese Americans specifically related to WWII in the United States. I agree so much about the translation of texts! There are beautifully written sentences or poems that can lose its meaning through translation. There are Japanese movies that I've watched that are based on books and I want to someday be able to read parts of these books. じゃ、またあした！
ReplyDeleteHi Clareさん. The most interesting part to me in these war periods like Three Kingdom period and Sengoku jidai is the strategies they use. It is kind of like Eastern version of Game of Throne but with a larger stage. I don't realize the question that how Japanese Americans were treated after WWII. So what did you find out in general in you research? I am very curious! Thanks for your reply.
Deleteこんばんは。It's really fascinating that you want to learn Japanese to further understand the history and culture of Japan (and China). Is Sengoku Jidai the era when Japanese had many warriors fighting each other? I am not a history person, but learning a language to learn their history sounds amazing and interesting. I'm excited to be able to learn Japanese and use it in daily conversations as well. I hope you could end up reading Japanese texts one day to further explore their history.
ReplyDeleteHi Lizさん. Yes, Sengoku Jidai is the era that Japanese feudal lords(だいみょう) fighting each other in order to 上洛. After that they probably continue to expand their force and unite the whole country. I am also excited as we learn more about Japanese, we know more about Japanese culture. We can even make jokes in Japanese now. That's amazing.
DeleteI heard for the first time that KARAOKE is famous for in China. I like playing video too. I like playing super Mario brothers. I sometimes watch movies about youtube, Japanese drama and Japanese comedy.

DeleteI recommend you to watch "Doctor X" and "HERO". Doctor X is Japanese medical drama. I think it's like 白い巨塔. The other HERO is Japanese laws drama. I like these dramas. I like legal high very much too! I watched it more two times!
